"Read a book,
sip some tea.
Create art,
climb a tree.
Seek adventure,
on land and sea.
Stay young at heart,
be wild and free."
Stories have a way of transporting us to lands unknown, challenging how we see the world, and prompting us to reflect on our own lives and choices.
What a privilege it is to journey alongside Shackleton on his expeditions, to run through Lesotho with Ryan Sandes, or to catch a glimpse into great minds like Richard Louv and C.S Lewis.
Here is a limited list of some of my favorite books and podcasts.
Recommended Books
Born to Run
- Christopher McDougal -
If you ever need some motivation to start running or to relight the fire, this is the book for you. This is the famous story of the Tarahumara people who reside in the Copper Canyons in Mexico. I do not want to spoil the story but it is truly inspiring and will leave you wanting to strap on some barefoot shoes and take to the mountains.
The Road Back to You
- Ian Morgan & Suzanne Stabile -
This is my favorite book about the enneagram, written by a Christian author. It sums up the virtues and downfalls of each of the 9 types. It is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about yourself and your loved ones.
The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs
- Joel Salatin -
Out of his many books, this was by far the most impactful for me. Joel has made a huge success of his farming career and has built a thriving enterprise where people, animals and crops thrive. This book was written as a call to action to Christians, it is biblically backed as it demonstrates why we should be the pioneers in the regenerative agriculture space. We are called to steward the land and there should be no separation between our Christian lives and the rest of our lives. God should be glorified in all of our choices, including our food choices. I have multiple copies of this book so that I can loan them out to people... highly recommend.
Run, Risk, Repeat
- Ryan Sandes -
Ryan Sandes... South African trail running icon. This book follows him along some of his biggest adventures. It takes you from his FKT in the Himalayas, to his run around Lesotho, to his 100mile run around his house during the pandemic. Since his recent 2nd place at the treacherous Cocodona 250 in 2025, I am certain Ryan will soon provide us with some more great reads.
The Last Child in the Woods
- Richard Louv -
This is an eye-opening book which addresses the epidemic of nature deficit disorder and its effects on our children and society as a whole. What I really enjoy about this book, is how it doesn't just list the problems, it leaves the reader with actionable solutions. This is a book that I would recommend to educators and anyone who is or wants to be a parent one day.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
- Stephen R. Covey -
I went through a self-help phase a while ago. And to be honest, this was really the best of what I read from that genre for me. It is a genuinely useful tool written by someone who practices what he preaches and is a voice worth listening to. I would highly recommend this to people looking to build healthy habits.
Mans Search for Meaning
- Victor Frankl -
This memoir follows the harrowing times as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp by Frankl, an Austrian psychologist. This is a truly inspiring read split into 2 sections. The first section being his experience in the camp, and the second about his theory of logotherapy. A thought-provoking read that will cause you to examine your life and where you find meaning.
The Endurance
- Alfred Lansing -
Join in on the harrowing journey across the South Atlantic along with Shackleton and his team. This is an expertly written book, carefully composed from the journals of Shackleton and his team. It is a story of resilience, camaraderie and daring adventure.
The Nature Fix
- Florence Williams -
This book is the perfect blend of poetry and science. Have you ever gone for a quiet walk in the garden after a long, stressful day? Did you feel calmer? Read this book to understand why. It beautifully explains what people know intuitively by using data which unpacks the benefits of wild spaces on our nervous systems and overall health. It also presents solutions to the nature-deficit being experienced in cities, and gives examples of where solutions are already in action.
The Four Loves
- C.S. Lewis -
This is a poetic little book that I keep coming back to. It is readable in a single sitting and if you prefer an audio version, audible has C.S. himself reading this book for radio (the only one that he read aloud for the public). It covers the 4 different types of love: Storge, Philia, Eros and Agape. A beautiful book that everyone should read at least once.
The Burning Shore
- Wilbur Smith -
This is W.S. first book where he used a female as the lead character, and he did not disappoint. This book had me on the edge of my seat from page one, I enjoyed the entire series that this is a part of (Courtney Series), but this was my favorite. Settings include war scenes in France, to Namibian deserts and Mountain Oases.
The Hunger Games Series
- Suzanne Collins -
These were my favorite books in high school, I read them all 3 times. They are a great escape, transporting you to another world. The writing is colorful while still very readable.
